This was doubly true of Czechoslovak hockey. Regardless of the historical period, Czechoslovakia’s national hockey team was always one of the best in the world. It is true that, until the 1970s, Czechoslovak hockey was amateur hockey, but it must be objectively admitted that this was so-called “hidden amateurism”, since the players were de facto professionals.

The task of this article is to take readers on a short excursion through the development of hockey in Czechoslovakia, because with few exceptions, they have likely not had an opportunity to appreciate its impact on the development of world hockey.

Despite the fact that the first rules of the game were brought from Canadian hockey to the Czech Republic and translated into Czech as early as 1903, bandy enjoyed much greater popularity among Czechoslovak spectators until 1930. In that year, however, there was a major turnaround, and Canadian ice hockey became one of the most popular sports in Czechoslovakia, while bandy gradually faded into history. For the duration of the Czechoslovak Republic, ice hockey was clearly the most popular and successful winter sport, winning the World Championship six times, along with 12 silver and 16 bronze medals. Czechoslovaks also achieved significant success at the Olympic Games, although they never became Olympic champions during this period. However, they won a silver medal at the Sarajevo Winter Olympics in 1984. I must not forget to mention the national team’s very successful performance against the world’s best professionals at the 1976 Canada Cup, where they reached the final, in which they lost to Canada. Everyone in Czechoslovakia will forever remember the 1–0 victory over Canada in the round-robin portion of the tournament, especially the heroic performance of goalie Vladimir Dzurilla.

Czechoslovak hockey players also achieved great results in the years following this event. In Czechoslovakia, many books have been written about this glorious history, most of them dealing with the events of this period only in terms of the results achieved. However, none of the publications have dealt in depth with the causes, reasons and context of these outcomes. Moreover, I am also not aware that any of the many books I mention have been translated into English and subsequently published in Canada or in the usa, and that is why I have decided to reveal these generally unknown secrets from the country where I was born, but will not end my life’s pilgrimage in, because the Czech o slo vak Republic ceased to exist as of 1993.

In 2022, in collaboration with Ján Holko, I wrote and published a detailed 400-page book titled Debate About Slovak Hockey and Its Perspectives, in which I discussed the influence of sports training methodology on the performance level of Czechoslovak hockey players in a historical context. Unfortunately, it is available only in the Slovak language; however, in this day and age of AI and various internet translators, this is not a problem for those who might wish to read it, even if they do not speak Slovak. Although the title of the book leads its readers to think that the text is exclusively about Slovak hockey, this is not the case; its main aim was to present the influence of methodology on the constantly increasing qualitative level of world and European hockey in the context of hockey development in Slovakia.

The cover of Debate About Slovak Hockey and Its Perspectives, by Ján Golian
and Ján Holko.

In this article, I will give a brief description of hockey methodology in Czechoslovakia up to 1992 and its influence on the development of world hockey. In the context of this article, it is pointless to go into details (these are in the book mentioned above), so I will only recall the names of the most important coaching personalities of that time and their specific contribution to the creation of the theory and practice of hockey methodology. At the same time, I believe it is important to stress how the particular methodological practice they authored was responsible for changing the way the game was played in Czechoslovakia and also in the world. The selected personalities of Czechoslovak hockey are chronologically arranged from the period of its foundation to the dissolution of Czechoslovakia on December 31, 1992.

Mike Buckna (Mike Buckna Jr. Collection)

Mike Buckna

Mike Buckna was born on March 24, 1908, to Slovak parents in Trail, British Columbia, where he developed as a hockey player. The successes have been built on the implementation of knowledge brought forward by these six men. Of course, the list of personalities who enriched the methodology of Czechoslovak hockey is much longer. I refer those who may be interested to the book mentioned, where the details are exhaustively described. More information about the book, or how to purchase it, can be found on the website www.hokej-polemika.sk.

The question arises as to whether the findings, conclusions and recommendations for the development of Czechoslovak hockey that were reached by the six mentioned personalities were their original findings or concluded by observing world hockey, gaining experience through international cooperation. Of course, in the beginning, it was about taking experience from Canadian hockey, and this transfer of information from Canada was done both from the practical (Matej Buckna) and theoretical (Lloyd Percival) side. The key role in the scientific study of the game of hockey after 1959 — that is, after the end of the World Championship in Prague and Bratislava — was played by two institutions of higher education, namely the Faculties of Physical Education and Sport at Charles University in Prague and J. A. Comenius University in Bratislava. However, it must be correctly acknowledged that it was Lloyd Percival’s 1950 publication The Hockey Handbook that fundamentally influenced the methodology of observational research of hockey in Czechoslovakia.

Further, the rivalry with Soviet hockey also played a significant role in this process, which deepened after the occupation of Czechoslovakia by ussr troops in 1968, an event that stifled the revival process in our country. It should not be forgotten, however, that, thanks to the scientific inventiveness of the six people mentioned above, the expert analyses and research results they produced were among the most advanced in the hockey world at the time.

Perhaps, at the time, it was a surprise to the Canadian hockey community that, in the second half of the 1970s, players from a small country like Czechoslovakia without a long hockey tradition could suddenly emerge and compete with the best Canadian nhl players, even beating them on their home turf during the inaugural Canada Cup in 1976. However, it was not so surprising for the hockey experts from Czechoslovakia, because they considered it to be a legitimate consequence of their great work in the field of hockey methodology. For the sake of historical hockey memory, this article is mainly dedicated to them.

Ján Golian is a PhD and CSc., a former university teacher, and, at 74 years of age, is devoted to the history of the development of the methodology of the training process in ice hockey.
